Over the last 20 years the Thoroughbred horse in Australia has gradually become less popular due to the introduction of purpose bred warmblood horses. In 1995 the figures were drastically different with the Thoroughbred horse making up a massive 90% of Showjumpers and Eventers and approximately 50% of Dressage horses (Information supplied from an independent study of horse events in NSW and ACT).
More alarmingly it has been found that the higher the standard of event equates to a drastic decline in Thoroughbred horses competing. Senior events at the recent Australian Showjumping Championships Thoroughbreds made up a mere 8% and sadly even less in the Junior classes (at 4%).
Competitive Thoroughbred Showjumpers have become the exception, an endangered species in an event that they formerly dominated. With Off the Track awards representing a consolation to a rider who has the misfortune of having a Thoroughbred as their mount.
Program Objectives and Initiative Effects
The Life After Racing program has been designed to be unbiased, offering a wide spread effect and maximum impact. Other organizations have their own ideas and commendable programs. The Life After Racing Board have a unique perspective being competition riders themselves and have identified flaws and failures within other programs and have been integral in the process of designing a system that works not only for one demographic of rider but for the greater population of Thoroughbred riders to maximize funding results.
Life After Racing aim to support a broad spectrum of events both EA affiliated and unaffiliated, plus other jump clubs and individually organized events. There are 195 Agricultural Shows in New South Wales, 71 of these shows are ‘affiliated’ with ‘Equestrian Australia’ (EA) only 36.5%. Life After Racing has no other agenda aside from the promotion of the Thoroughbred horse.
Percentage of Thoroughbred Showjumpers and projected ‘Life After Racing’ program influence.
In order for this program to be effective we require ongoing commitment from the Thoroughbred Industry, we do not expect much change to occur in the first year and should see a marked result by the fifth year of implementation. Performance indicators will be reviewed regularly and any change required identified and conducted.
Strategy
Simply training more horses for the current market would be redundant if competition rider’s attitudes remained unchanged. Life After Racing is committed to encouraging riders to revisit the usefulness of the Thoroughbred.
‘Supply and demand’ is both the source of the problem and also pivotal to the solution. Supply is indicative of the number of horses retiring from their racing careers each and every year. The number of horses is sizable and as breeding slightly decreases each year so will the number of retirees however this number is unlikely to experience any significant change in the near future. The variable that is left is ‘Demand’. Demand is the key to changing the statistical decline in number of Thoroughbreds competing in performance competition.
The quickest and most effective way to instigate change is to add value to the Thoroughbred horse.
Life After Racing encourages results in the competition arena by way of Prize money. Firstly we have seen professionals purchasing a Thoroughbred in order to be in the running for that extra Prize money. From there many professionals will sell the horse once performing and educated to the open market or their protégé.
To keep the professionals motivated to excel on Thoroughbreds who are competitive. Life After Racing has put forward $300,000 in big incentive bonuses.
The following strategy has been implemented with a positive response from competitors.
Thoroughbred specific Prize money.
100% prizemoney Bonus on the Thoroughbred horse who wins or places at a show. This has proven to encourage more Thoroughbred horses in competition without rewarding mediocracy.
