About Life after racing
Life After Racing was developed in response to the evident decline in Thoroughbred horses being utilized as competition horses in the performance sector. A board of professional riders and competitors was created in 2013 across the Eastern states to help address the problem, all of the board having previously competed successfully on the retired racehorse. Board members represented Queensland, New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory and South Australia. The outcome of the initial meetings set in place targeted strategies to improve the popularity of retired racehorses for Showjumping initially with a view to roll out the program to hacking and eventing.
Goals
1. Improve the popularity of the Thoroughbred for performance competition.
2. Develop markets for retired racehorses locally, interstate and overseas.
3. Decrease the wastage within the racing industry.
4. Reverse the upward trend of purpose bred horses for the performance industry.
In 2016 a proposal was put to Racing NSW, Queensland Racing and Racing Victoria.
